2019 GRÜNER VELTLINER – Experimental Wine 

Handmade - Natural Wild Yeast Ferment - Cool Barrel Fermented - No Acid or Enzymes Added - Barrel Aged on Lees   

Vineyard -  Antonello Vineyard, Alpine Valley.

The final of our experimental wines for 2019 is a Gruner Veltliner. This fruit was sourced from brothers Stef and Peter Antonello, they planted their vineyard at Buffalo River in 1992. Although a majority of their vineyard is planted to Chardonnay, Pinot Noir and Prosecco they also have some smaller plantings of alternative varieties such as this Gruner Veltliner which was planted in 2014. This wine is experimental for us in that we knew very little about the variety and decided to ferment it in French Oak barrels as opposed to stainless steel which is common practice in its native Austria.

Once in the winery the fruit was gently pressed to a couple of 5 year old French oak puncheons and naturally fermented slow and cool. Oak of this age will impart very little, if any oak characteristics, instead we believe they are the best vessel for wines to ferment and age in. Oak is a natural product that allows the wines to breath and evolve with time, something not possible with stainless steel tanks. Given the wine was fermented and aged in small vessels on its lees it is a more textural Gruner Veltliner than most. The wine was then matured for 10 months of full lees with no stirring before light filtration and hand bottling at our winery. Vegan Friendly
