THE WINE

Yurilla Vineyard sits on the valley floor and is a warmer site for the King Valley, a perfect fit for Fiano, which originally hails from Campania in Italy and needs some warmth to bring up ripeness in line with its acidity.

Peter’s vineyard is always meticulously kept and it was no surprise to us that he had no trouble navigating the many curveballs that were thrown his way with the weather in 2023. The fruit that was delivered to us in the winery had the perfect numbers we look for in Fiano and was squeaky clean. We are firm believers that good fruit is the key to good wine.

The wine displays an abundance of tropical fruits and lychee on the nose that follow through to the palate. Refreshing acidity balanced with a touch of residual sugar that is barely noticeable causes this wine disappears from the glass rather quickly.

VINIFICATION

2O23 was a vintage that required much tireless work in the vineyards as a result of a very wet humid start to the growing season. However those who managed to get there vines through to Christmas disease free were rewarded with fruit displaying an amazing vibrancy and natural acidity thanks to the super weather conditions. 

Machine picked in the cool of the night and immediately pressed to stainless steel the initial press cut was made at about 5OOL/T with pressings the pressings kept separate. Fiano is naturally quite a phenolic variety which is why we make an early press cut. The pressings then had some skins added back to the tank where they remained for some 124 days, this technique works well to remove harsh tannin and phenolics from the pressings but also adds texture and another dimension to the wine.

A healthy natural wild yeast fermentation commenced almost immediately in the component on skins, a small amount of this was used to seed the free run component. The ferment was kept ultra cool at 13c throughout fermentation and racked clean off lees once fermentation was complete. The only additions made to this wine were bentonite, nutrients and PMS.
